Online application provider 8Apps has announced that it will be shutting in January. 8apps offered collaborative online tools not dissimilar to those offered by 37signals.
According to a post by Download Squad reviewing the site back in July the site was on the market then, but it appears there were no takers. Probably not helping the [...]

Life-saving program BANNED by the Feds!
December 30th, 2007 · Comments
Pardon me while I bang my head on my desk Less than 3 weeks ago I wrote about a simple storage device that saved 1500+ lives and over $175,000,000 in just a couple of hundred hospitals out of 3700 nationwide. Now the Feds have ordered the program halted. Read on to learn what you can do to help. The technology: printed paper checklists of the proper steps for common intensive care unit (ICU) procedures like inserting catheters. Nationwide some 4% of ICU catheters get infected resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and billions in added expenses for heroic care efforts. The checklists reduced infection rates to 0%. Bureaucracy inaction In a mind-numbing display of bureaucratic reasoning, Kristina C. Borror,…

Who’s choosing XP over Vista?
December 30th, 2007 · Comments
One of the most accepted bits of conventional wisdom among pundits as 2007 draws to a close is that the marketplace has rejected Windows Vista in favor of Windows XP. The biggest piece of evidence is Dell’s decision in April 2007, based on a vocal response via its Dell IdeaStorm page, to continue offering Windows XP as an option on some consumer systems. It picked up steam with Microsoft’s announcement in September that it was going to allow its large OEM partners to preinstall Windows XP until June 30, 2008, a five-month extension over the original January 30 cutoff date. (A CNET News report from last April indicates that HP and Lenovo have adopted similar strategies, offering XP as an option on business-class machines but for consumer products.)…

Life in extreme environments
December 30th, 2007 · Comments
U.S. biologists have developed a model mapping the control circuit governing a bacteria named Halobacterium salinarum, which can live in extremely salty environments, and that can survive to radiation which would be deadly to most other organisms. Their model shows how these bacteria adapt themselves in response to their environment. According to the biologists, ‘this study marks the first time researchers have accurately predicted a cell’s dynamics at the genome scale.’ This research effort is ‘an important milestone for the new field of systems biology,’ but could also lead to new ways of engineering biofuels and pharmaceuticals. According to MicrobeWiki, “halobacteria are halophilic microorganisms, which means they grow in extremely high salinity environments. Halobacteria can be found in highly saline…

December 30th, 2007 · Comments
With all those highly advanced phones, we thought Japanese won’t buy into all the iPhone hype. And while we’re not sure whether Apple will be able to repeat its success from the U.S. market, we’ve spotted a Japanese guy who seemed so desperate to get an iPhone that he made his already uber-cool Sony Ericsson [...]

Our Second Most Commented Post of Year: Hey we’re AT&T, don’t diss us or you could be gone!
December 30th, 2007 · Comments
A few months ago, several bloggers noted a clause in AT&T’s contracts that advised customers the following: AT&T may immediately terminate or suspend all or a portion of your Service, any Member ID, electronic mail address, IP address, Universal Resource Locator or domain name used by you, without notice, for conduct that AT&T believes (a) violates the Acceptable Use Policy; (b) constitutes a violation of any law, regulation or tariff (including, without limitation, copyright and intellectual property laws) or a violation of these TOS, or any applicable policies or guidelines, or (c) tends to damage the name or reputation of AT&T, or its parents, affiliates and subsidiaries. And there’s more that neither Slashdot or Ars Technica reported. That’d be 5.2:…

Flying solar: Nellis Air Force base claims largest solar installation
December 30th, 2007 · Comments
I wrote a few weeks ago about a solar technology manufacturing facility being built in Las Vegas by Australian company Ausra. Now, it turns out that nearby Nellis Air Force Base has just completed the largest solar photovoltaic installation in the United States. The array, which includes more than 72,000 solar panels, is supposed to provide Nellis with an estimated 30 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. That’s roughly 25 percent of the electricity needed by the base, where about 12,000 people live. The installation was started in April, but apparently has been in the works on paper for about three years. It covers 140 acres and was built by the Air Force along with Sunpower Corp., Nevada Power Co….
